Property Owners Association Takes a Stand
January 20, 2018 - Our association is in favor of a lot of things, but in order to get and preserve the good things, you’ve got to oppose the bad ones. At the January Property Owners meeting it was decided to take opposing positions in three areas and a supporting position on the elimination or alleviation of sewage sludge landspreading.
The NHPOA has written letters of support to County Supervisors expressing support for a proposed change in county landspreading provisions that will substantially limit landspreading of sewage sludge in our area.
There is currently an open request with County Planning for a permit to build massive solar photovoltaic installations in both Daggett and Newberry. Most of the installations are in the area West of Minneola beginning about one half mile east of Daggett all the way to Minneola Road, perhaps completely surrounding Barstow-Daggett airport. These installations, although always objectionable in some fashion are, in a way, only replacing previous solar installations that were sited there, one central receiver facility and one parabolic trough facility, both of which have long since been abandoned.
December Meeting Focuses on Issues and Bylaws
At the December 9 meeting nomination for offices continued and committees were formed to address the major challenges confronting Newberry-Harvard including the landspreading of sludge, billboards along interstate 40, water, and blight. Solar issues were discussed but formation of a committee to address those issues was postponed to the next meeting. Seeing that there is currently a rumor? circulating that a major central solar photovoltaic facility has been approved just West of Minneola in Daggett, the discussion at the next meeting may involve more solar than much of anything else.
November 11, 2017 Meeting a Success
Our Association met at 10 a.m. last Saturday at the Newberry Senior/Family Center, there being a lively discussion about the attempted dissolution of our Association early this year, followed by information regarding our current status, the need to conscientiously fulfill all the requirements of a non-profit, to get back to the basics of our Association, that is to support issues that can have a positive benefit for our members, to oppose those are perceived to have a detrimental effect, while ignoring those special interests that promise material support of our Association in exchange for less opposition to questionable projects that hurt our community, realizing of course that support for any Association position is dependent on the approval of at least a majority of meeting attendees, members in good standing.
Community Services District Wants to Increase Property Taxes?
July 25, 2017 - At the last Community Service District (CSD) meeting, Directors Vickie Paulsen and Paula Deel proposed an increase in Newberry Springs property assessments to support District "improvements" which would ostensibly include creating a more or less professional fire department headed by the existing Fire Chief, Steve Miller, who is known to enthusiastically support such a move.
